The inspiration behind the Sober Self-Test began with a deeply personal loss. More than thirty years ago, Tim Downey experienced the heartbreaking tragedy of losing a valued employee, Jeannie, in a drunk-driving collision as she was traveling home to spend Christmas with her parents. The sudden loss devastated Tim, his partners, and their entire team. It was a painful reminder of how one impaired decision can change countless lives forever.

In the years that followed, Tim often reflected on that moment. He believed that if the driver who struck Jeannie had simply known he was impaired—if he had access to a reliable way to confirm it—he might have chosen not to drive. Jeannie’s life might have been spared.

That belief stayed with Tim for decades and ultimately became a mission.

Determined to help prevent similar tragedies, Tim committed himself to creating a simple tool that could help people make better decisions after drinking. His vision was straightforward but powerful: give people a quick and accurate way to know whether alcohol is still affecting them before they decide to drive.

Over the next fourteen years, Tim worked closely with chemists, medical professionals, law enforcement leaders, and families affected by impaired driving to develop what is now known as the Sober Self-Test.

In 2023, the product was successfully brought to market, and in September 2025, Tim’s long journey of research, development, and persistence was validated when the Sober Self-Test achieved FDA clearance.

Today, Tim’s mission continues to guide the company. The Sober Self-Test is more than a product—it represents a growing cultural shift toward responsible decision-making after drinking.
